Exotic Hand embroidery by the Lambadi Tribe
The most striking feature of the Lambadi women was their attire. Women usually wore bright and colourful cotton clothing such as, a voluminous frilly long skirt or a ghagra (called phetiya) and a short sleeved top that is embroidered in the front and tie behind (called kanchali). They used mirror chips and coins to decorate it. The veil was called ‘Turki’ was also embroidered decoratively.

I would like to thank Dr. Lalitha Regi, Founder and Manager of, Porgai Artisans Association, for her cordial support, valuable information and guidance.
