The Vetiver Project is a collaborative initiative by Good Earth, Delhi and Jasmine Concretes, Tamil Nadu. The main focus of the project is the engage the flower picking women of Sennampalayam and Bellapalayam in activities that can be practiced at home within their comfort to produce home furnishing products for an extra source of income.
Vetiver is a perennial grass with large tufted bunch grass that reaches upto 1.5 meters in height. The thin leaves and stems are erected and rigid. The fragrant roots grow downward in the soil and can attain depths of more than meters (10 feet).
Keeping the vetiver roots as the key raw material, the women are now practicing both weaving on looms and basketry techniques to develop the products. The vetiver roots are sourced from the farmers and sent for oil extraction. The extracted oil is further used for making perfumes. Once the oil is extracted from the roots, they are sent to the women to weave. Products include, place mats, runners, window blinds, trays, bowls, baskets, trivets, coasters and laundry baskets.
